What Does a Solar Inverter Do? Panels, Inverters and Batteries

Panels generate electricity; the inverter has another role

A solar inverter converts direct current from solar panels into alternating current for the AC side of an electrical system. The U.S. Department of Energy explains this role in its inverter guide. Separate the question of how much electricity panels can generate from the question of what operating functions the conversion equipment supports. A photograph of rooftop panels does not show every part of the system.

A battery stores energy; it is not another name for an inverter

Batteries and inverters have different functions, even when a product combines equipment in one cabinet or package. Ask the supplier to identify the storage component, the conversion component and what is actually included. A white wall-mounted cabinet does not prove that a battery is present, and the word hybrid does not mean a ready-to-use battery is included. The illustration presents equipment roles conceptually; it is not a wiring diagram.

A type name is a starting point; check the actual model

String inverters and microinverters describe different arrangements: the former serve groups of panels, while the latter are small devices at panel level. The name alone is not a reason to choose either. Give the designer roof, shading and usage information, then request model numbers and manufacturer documents so that the proposal identifies actual equipment rather than advertising for a similar model.

Monitoring does not necessarily measure the whole building

Some inverters provide monitoring and communications, but a screen showing solar production may not show total building consumption. Ask which device supplies each reading, where it measures and whether extra meters or communications equipment are needed. For historical data or alerts, also ask about account access and connectivity. Do not interpret a screenshot before understanding what the system measures.

Ask about backup power separately

Having an inverter does not establish that electricity remains available during an outage. The Department of Energy guide explains that operation with energy storage without grid support requires a system designed for that purpose. State this as a separate requirement so that both design and equipment can be checked. Do not cut power, open enclosures or alter wiring yourself to test an advertising claim.

Organize three groups of questions for the designer

Before consulting Kintury Energy, group questions around what generates electricity, which equipment converts it and whether energy storage is included. Add the information you want to see in the app and any future equipment plans. This distinction makes design and installation discussions clearer; compatibility, equipment sizing and connection requirements still need assessment for the actual site and models.
