Using Solar Module EL Results at Handover

Start with what is being handed over

When a seller provides solar module EL results before handover, first ask whether the report covers the modules actually being delivered or samples of that model. Use the agreed quantity, model and module serial numbers as the baseline. The aim is to connect test evidence to the goods received, rather than collect convincing images from another batch. This article offers questions for buyers, not instructions for carrying out electrical tests.

Separate cell images from power measurements

Fraunhofer ISE research assessed electroluminescence, or EL, images for microcracks and finger faults while separately studying module power changes before and after testing. Read EL images alongside technical explanations and relevant measurements. Do not convert the proportion of dark areas into a percentage of lost power yourself, or treat an apparently uniform image as a guarantee of lifetime project energy production.

Establish whether every module or a sample was tested

Ask the report provider to identify the scope, selection method and serial numbers corresponding to the images. In a hypothetical order of one hundred modules with images for ten, ask how those ten were selected and how far the conclusions apply to the delivery. Do not record that all one hundred were inspected when fewer images are available. Keep gaps in evidence on a list of questions awaiting answers.

Relate inspection points to transport

Ask whether images were captured before packing, before warehouse dispatch or after arrival at the installation site, and which handling stages lack test evidence. If before-and-after comparisons are needed, agree in advance how the same modules will be matched and how testing conditions will allow meaningful comparison. A difference between two images should not immediately be used to assign responsibility for damage without checking events and other evidence.

Agree how uncertainties will be handled before acceptance

Ask the project lead to explain the acceptance criteria in the actual procurement specification and agreement, including when repeat tests, further electrical measurements or specialist assessment are required. Record who will assess the issue and when a conclusion is due. Building owners should not disconnect cables or energize modules to imitate the test. Do not retrospectively change criteria simply to pass an unresolved result.

Keep a handover package traceable to each module

The final package should link module serial numbers to complete reports, inspection dates, relevant measurements and the status of resolved or outstanding questions. Retain original files rather than only images forwarded in chat. Discuss handover requirements with Kintury Energy within the project's scope, and first confirm whether coordination of specialist EL testing is included in its services. Article illustrations are conceptual, not results from real modules or a real facility.
