Total battery capacity and usable energy: what to check before comparing proposals

Similar capacity figures can mean different things

If two proposals specify a 10 kWh battery, do not assume they offer the same usable energy. One may show total capacity while the other shows usable energy under the manufacturer's conditions. Request the specification for the proposed model and read the full field name, such as Total Energy or Usable Energy. If it says only capacity, mark the meaning for confirmation before dividing price by that figure. Do not infer it from advertising for another model.

An example that lists both figures

The US documentation for Tesla Powerwall 2 AC with Backup Gateway 2 lists 14 kWh total energy and 13.5 kWh usable energy, with conditions of 25°C and 3.3 kW charge or discharge power. This example only shows that the two fields can differ. It is neither a product offer for Thailand nor a statement that Kintury Energy uses this model in every project.

Compare usable energy on the same basis

Suppose proposal A lists 10 kWh total and 9 kWh usable, while proposal B lists 9 kWh usable without stating total capacity. The larger number in A does not establish that it provides more usable energy. Before comparing prices, check whether both usable figures share the same conditions. If the manufacturer has already accounted for the permitted operating range, do not deduct a depth-of-discharge percentage again without support from that model's documentation.

Read footnotes and identify the measurement point

Ask the provider to identify the model, number of units, document version and conditions attached to the figure. Ask whether energy is measured at the battery side or another delivery point, and whether it describes new equipment or has an age-related condition. If the document does not say, mark the item as awaiting confirmation. Do not assume every manufacturer's usable figure means AC energy already delivered to appliances, or substitute round-trip efficiency for usable capacity.

Separate specifications from operating settings

Specified usable energy is not the energy available to supply loads at every moment. The current charge level, reserve settings and constraints of connected equipment also matter. Support for high-power appliances or starting current requires checks separate from energy capacity. A kWh figure alone therefore does not establish which appliances can run together or how long backup power will last. Ask the responsible specialist to show the assumptions for the actual use case.

Prepare a short comparison table

Create one row per model, separating total capacity, usable energy, measurement point, test conditions and missing information. Attach the original specification page instead of copying figures without footnotes. When discussing it with Kintury Energy, provide the electricity-use pattern and intended project scope so the proposed system can be considered together. Comparing information on the same basis reduces misunderstanding; it does not guarantee savings or backup duration.
