Cold Weather and Solar Voltage: Why String Design Must Check Voc

Total panel power does not settle the voltage question

A solar proposal often starts with panel quantity and total power, but connecting panels in a series string also requires voltage checks. Voc in a module datasheet means open-circuit voltage. It is neither power in watts nor the operating voltage at maximum power. Buyers should ask which data supports the proposed number of modules per string against equipment limits, instead of checking only the desired system power.

Low temperature is a design condition to examine

Section 3.2 of SMA's planning guide explains that open-circuit voltage rises at lower temperatures. It uses Voc, the temperature coefficient and the lowest expected temperature at the installation location when assessing the maximum. A Voc value at standard test conditions alone therefore does not answer every site's question. Even in a warm country, the designer should state project assumptions rather than directly adopting a temperature from an overseas example.

Connect the module, string and inverter documents

Prepare the module and inverter model numbers and the document editions used in the proposal. Ask the designer to identify Voc, the relevant coefficient, modules per string and the equipment voltage limits being checked. The explanation should refer to the actual roof grouping plan. Separate groups with different modules or inverters. This is a discussion checklist for a designer, not a shortcut for a building owner to calculate a safe panel count independently.

Recheck the design when the module model changes

In a hypothetical example, a supplier substitutes a module with similar wattage while keeping the same quantity. Nearly unchanged total power does not establish identical voltage or temperature-dependent values. Request both datasheets and the revised string assessment. Also ask whether current limits, operating ranges and other equipment constraints still pass. Checking open-circuit voltage is one part of design, not certification that the entire system is suitable.

Do not disconnect cables to take your own reading

If a screen value differs from a document, record the screen, time and system status available through normal access, then send them to the responsible person. Do not treat an operating reading as open-circuit voltage or disconnect connectors, open enclosures or measure rooftop circuits yourself. Measurement and interpretation require suitable procedures and equipment. The illustrations are conceptual scenes, not wiring plans or field-testing instructions.

Keep proposal assumptions traceable

When discussing a project with Kintury Energy, start with equipment models, the string plan and questions about the temperature used in calculations. Request a record of the assessment, document editions and responsible person, and revisit it when equipment or plans change. The cited SMA guide explains principles; it does not replace the proposed model's manual or project standards. This check does not guarantee energy production or savings.
